On Friday, August 20, three-year-old Alesaundra Tafoya of Northern California, walked two blocks to the local firehouse that she and her parents pass every day to tell firefighters that her dad was “frozen” and wouldn’t wake up. Her parents had taught her that the fire house was safe and firefighters are her friends.
Alesaundra led firefighters back to her house, where they found her father in need of medical care.
Alesaundra’s father, Frank Tafoya, took the wrong dosage of his medication and lost consciousness. Doctors said that, without the prompt medical attention, he would have died.
“I’ve been here over 20 years,” Capt. Robert Villalovoz told CNN affiliate KOVR. “It’s the first time I’ve had a 3-year-old walk up to the fire station.”
“She’s been listening,” her mother told CNN. “What we’ve been teaching her she’s been listening and that’s good.”
The Fire Station plans to hold some kind of ceremony to honor Alesaundra’s actions.
There’s a lesson here for all of us: Three years old is not too young to start teaching our children about safety and emergency. Like Alesaundra, they may be listening.
