TODAY’S BLOG

My latest book, Dear Bully:  A Collection of Poems about Bullying, captures the emotions associated with bullying.  I wrote this 53-page book for 6th graders and above.  I hope that the poems will grab the emotions of the bully and inspire him (or her) to change for the better.  And, for the bullied, I hope that they will be inspired to stand strong and not give the bully too much power.  Here are four of those poems.

Please leave a comment to let me know what you think.

Four Poems from “Dear Bully”

Dear Bully:

Sending mean stuff on your computer
Or texting it on your phone
Is no way to deal with anyone;
It’s better to leave them alone.
Cyber bullying is just as bad
As doing it face to face.
It’s nothing to be proud of,
It’s really a total disgrace.
Instead of sending mean stuff,
Start a “Cyber Friendship Chain.”
Include the kids you bullied
And then you all will gain
A better way of living,
More smiles in all your days,
Using your computers and your phones
In smart and friendly ways.

Dear Bully:

Last night, I thought about ending my life.
I was giving you way too much power.
Then I thought about all of the people I love.
To them, I’m a beautiful flower.
I’ll continue my life for them;
I’ll continue my life for me.
I’ve taken your power, Dear Bully.
You have my sympathy.

Dear Bully:

My child does not deserve
The hurt and the pain that you cause.
If you would stop and think,
Your actions would give you pause.
You’d realize that each of us
Must have our chances to shine.
You could be setting a better example;
You could help this child of mine.
I ask you to stop and think, Dear Bully.
Please walk in the shoes of my kid
I think that would change your actions,
And you would be glad that you did.

Dear Bully:

Last night I dreamed that I came to school
And you apologized.
In front of everybody,
You said you realized
That bullying is for cowards,
And you choose to be brave.
Treating others like dirt is easy,
But it’s no way to behave.
The teachers and kids applauded.
You smiled and took a bow.
Then I woke up from my dream.
But anything’s possible.  Wow!

    I enjoyed reading “Dear Bully.” Hopefully, one or all of the poems will touch someone’s heart and help to put an end to all bullying…wouldn’t that be wonderful?!

  2. living4bliss says:

    It is so important for people to realize how damaging bullying can be to others. Thankfully we are finally beginning to move beyond “sticks and stones” to having REAL dialog about the pain that bullies inflict and how to realistically deal with bullies.

    Keep up this most important work. You should try to get it into the schools (I live near the infamous Columbine HS) because we so need it.
