THE VISION: Telling Kids That They Can Make the World a Better Place
by Joyce Fields
Too many of today’s K-12 students go to school because they “have to.” They have little or no enthusiasm about their education. We adults must do something to change that. We must get them involved AND excited about education and what it can and will do for them.
I wrote this book to take kids on a journey into the past, during the days of slavery, to explain how important education truly is. It’s for children of all ethnicities—black, white, Native American, Latin, and Asian.
It contains a “Personal School Contract” and a “Personal Home Contract”—mechanisms by which students can save face and start over, on their terms.
It also contains a “Five-Week Performance Tracker” for students to monitor their own progress.
Now, more than ever, we must get American kids to focus and concentrate on doing their best in school and getting a good education. They’re competing with kids all over the world. This book can help!
THE VISION: Telling Kids That They Can Make the World a Better Place
Shortly before class begins on the first day of school, the fifth-grade students are noisily walking into their new classroom.
The bell rings, and the noise decreases.
The teacher, Mrs. Shannon, stands at the front of the room.
“Good morning, class. My name is Mrs. Shannon. I want to share a very sad fact with you: American students are falling way behind other students of the world. We have to change that. American students are not falling behind because they are not as smart—they certainly are. All of you can achieve excellent grades. I know that, but you have to know it. So, I have a special treat for you. We’re going to watch a play. We have two seventh graders—Anthony and Jessica— who will play the part of two slave children—George and Rosie—in the South in 1855.
Pay close attention to their conversation. You’ll notice that they will be speaking the way that slaves spoke in those days. They did not know anything about correct grammar or how to pronounce some words, so listen closely. When it’s over, I want you to share your thoughts with me and the class. Your thoughts are very important.”
Mrs. Shannon sits down near the front of the classroom and calls to the seventh graders, who are waiting just outside the classroom door, “Come on in, Anthony and Jessica.”
Anthony and Jessica enter the room and sit down on the floor at the front of the class. Anthony addresses the class, “Okay, class, pretend that Jessica and I—as Rosie and George—are on a plantation, sitting in a barn late at night.”
Jessica starts the play in her role as Rosie.
