During “Black History Month,” (February) I will continue Spreading Good News about Black History on Monday through Thursday.  On Fridays, I will keep posting the very popular “Funny Friday” pieces!

I hope you enjoy this piece of Black History!

The next time you buy cold or frozen products from a store, say “thanks” to Frederick Jones, a black man.

Frederick Jones was the first person to invent a practical, mechanical refrigeration system for long-haul trucks and railroad cars, which eliminated the risk of food spoilage during long-distance shipping trips.  He invented The Thermo King Model A in 1938.

Frederick McKinley Jones was born in Covington, Kentucky, near Cincinnati, Ohio, on May 17, 1893.  He was a trained mechanic, a skill he learned doing military service in France during World War I.  His mastery of electronic devices was largely self-taught, through work experience and the inventing process.

Frederick Jones InventionFrederick Jones was granted more than 40 patents in the field of refrigeration.  His inspiration for the refrigeration unit was a conversation that he had with a truck driver who had lost a shipment of chickens because the trip took too long, and the truck’s storage compartment overheated.

Jones also developed an air-conditioning unit for military field hospitals and a refrigerator for military field kitchens.  He received over 60 patents during his lifetime.

Frederick Jones died in 1961.
